Artists | Back to Back Theatre, Marion Conrow, Aidan Moesby, The Vacuum Cleaner and Hana Madness, Romily Alice Walden and Jason Walsh-Mills

F L U X is an exhibition of contemporary digital art from around the world by prominent d/Deaf and disabled artists. The exhibition features video, virtual reality, and interactive digital work by artists from Australia, the UK, Europe, and Asia. The exhibition showcases the way disabled artists have utilised the potential of digital technology to explore the variations of lived experience in the world, from the fluctuating individual experience of disability to the diverse collective emotional experience of a whole city.

People with disabilities have often been at the forefront of adapting new forms of technology to aid in navigating a world designed to conform to non-disabled bodies. This adaptive nature is highly evident in the work of disabled artists. This skill for creative adaption coupled with an eager embracement of the proliferation of accessible digital technology over the past 30+ years is reflected in the work of the artists in F L U X.

A lifetime of experiencing the world through a non-typical lens and the ability to use digital technology to construct work that integrates elements of time, interactivity, responsiveness and transformation has been expertly harnessed by the participating artists to imbue their works with evolving narratives that move beyond static readings. The artists encourage audiences to engage on a journey with the works to gain a deeper understanding of the vast varied expanse of ways people experience the world we all share.

F L U X is the curatorial debut of Australian disabled artist Daniel Savage. The exhibition reflects his belief that the work of disabled artists can reveal unique insights into our experience of the world and can demonstrate critical and conceptual rigour on par with other leading movements in contemporary art today.
